| | Custom t-shirt Quilt for Eagle Scout A family wanted a unique gift and sent us his collection of tee shirts and various other shirts, a frisbee, etc. from his Boy Scout adventures. We took a little of everything and... we added a couple of photos and a printed note from his mom and dad.
This was truley an awsome family to work with. The enclosed note expresses why we love to share our talent with others..........
I want you to know that the quilt that you made for us to give our son was absolutely outstanding. As we had told you, he is an Eagle Scout and just recently finished college at NC State University. He mentioned several years ago that he would like a quilt made from his old T-shirts that he had gotten at various Scouting events around the USA.
It must have been fate that lead us to you. We normally open our presents on Christmas Eve and this year was no exception. We had already gone through the dilemma of what
to get a 26 year old. Words can not describe the expression on his face when he saw the quilt. We left and went to a special church service after opening our gifts. While at church our son, David, saw a friend of his and brought him back to the house that very night just to show off the quilt. Now you must know that it is somewhat impressive for a 26 year old to want to share something like a quilt to a fellow friend.
What you did with the design of the quilt reminds me of the old gospel song, "The Master's Touch". It is about an old violin that was being sold at an auction. It was scarred and ugly and looked like it was useless. The bidding was going very badly when an older gentleman picked it up and began to play it. The music was so beautiful that everyone sat with their mouths open. When he finished, the bidding went crazy and was sold at an enormous price. When asked why it brought so much the auctioneer explained that it was the master's touch that caused it. What you did with those old T-shirts was equivalent to the Master's Touch.
I can not go without telling you that what you did is beyond words in some cases. The stitching in the quilt is like a hidden treasure. Every time you look at it you see another intricate detail. The stitches with the sun, moon, ropes, scout symbols, eagles, and others make the quilt have its own personality.
The quilt is like a well written novel. Each square is like a new chapter in a book and has its own story to tell. In many cases you can tell that you let the design of the stitching relate to the particular square. One that
I remember is the T-shirt with a camp fire flame on it and it was so neat to see how you outlined the flames with the stitching.
You know part of the reason for this quilt was to be able to keep memories of things from the past. Pictures do that often for us but pictures can only be viewed and hence
stimulate our minds. This quilt touches more senses other than sight. It can also be touched as well as viewed and all the meanwhile making those memories even more real.
It is my desire that you being the master in this case can share in the joy of knowing how you have made our family proud of what this quilt represents, where it has been, how it got there, and the people whose lives it has touched. It stands as a tribute of our son's accomplishments as well as the artist that made it.
